Tips for Working from Home

  1. Follow a schedule

Yes, the beauty of working from home means “owning your own time”, however, if you treat every day like summer vacation, you aren’t going to get much done.

But this can be a bit tricky if you’re trying to work at home and have children at home, too. I try to start my day before the sun – before my children are up. I can get a few hours of work done before the morning household rush. It is not unusual for me to send out emails with a 4 a.m. time stamp. This is also a great time to plan my day.

2. Treat your home office like an office-office

This means you should have an actual work-space. It’s ideal if you can set aside a room of your house as your office, but a corner of a room will do, too. There are people who’ve converted a closet into an office. Having your own space can make working from home much easier. It can make you feel like you’re at work, increasing your productivity and focus. Of course, when setting up a home office, you’ll need to find a desk and chair from a uk office furniture supplier or one closer to where you live. This way, you’ll have proper office equipment, making you want to work. However, if you don’t have a spare room, you could just sit at the kitchen table, or in a recliner in the living room. Be sure to set that area up with the things you need to get your work done. If you eventually find that you can’t focus on your business at home, you might need to consider finding a commercial property to run your business from. Having your own space for your business is important to ensure you can really focus on your work, whilst also giving you the room to grow the company.

Even though you are working from home, you are still required to work and to complete your jobs throughout the day. Because of this, you are more than likely having to work with important documents surrounding the business, whether that be financial, personal, or business-related, they still need to be handled and disposed of with great care. As most offices have access to a shredder already that can get rid of any important information, you may want to think about buying shredder when determining which equipment you need for your home office. By doing this, you are protecting your business and the people who are in it. Preparation is key!

3. Make a plan for each day, and then find a way to stick to it.

For me, to-do lists work great. Each morning, I write out a list of what I need to accomplish that day and then I mark each thing off as I complete it. Others like to use a calendar app. No matter what method works for you, the more specific you are with your goals, the more likely you are to reach them.

When you reach that last goal, you’re done for the day, so make sure you let yourself be done for the day. Close up that laptop and do something fun.
